IN THIS ISSUEContributorsSofia LevinTasmania’s isolation is said to be its greatest advantage, but so too are the climate, fertile soils and passionate people that make this ‘island off an island’ arguably one of the best places to experience all things paddock-to-plate. TASMANIA P.54Adrian PhillipsOn Denmark’s Coastal Lands, you can watch dolphins and rabbits, eat slow food, ride slow horses, visit Viking graves and take a safari with a pair of seaweed fanatics. Best of all, though, this is a place where you’ll find locals with a tale to tell. DENMARK P.86Jamie LaffertyI’d only previously visited Cyprus’s busy coastal resorts, but taking a road trip through the interior showed me an altogether wilder, prettier side of the island, one filled with dramatic mountains, sleepy villages and Greek legends. IN THIS ISSUEEditor’s letterAs the nights draw in and the temperature drops… you know where I’m going with this. If the looming winter months don’t make you want to pack your bags and escape to warmer climes, then you’re probably in the minority. The allure of sun on your skin and sand between your toes is one thing, but the Caribbean — far more multifaceted and varied than many people imagine — has such a wealth of experiences that it would take a lifetime of visits to tick off them all off. So, which island to choose? What will your Caribbean adventure look like? You could opt for an active escape, be it cycling in Jamaica’s Blue Mountains in search of some of the world’s most prized coffee beans or hiking through rainforest to Dominica’s…2 min

SMART TRAVELLERThandi Masuku, Hluhluwe, South AfricaThandi is a school principal in Hluhluwe, a remote area of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Having realised there was a need for a good school in her area, she set one up. She started small, but over the years, her school has grown to become a cornerstone of the community. During the nationwide lockdown in 2020, Thandi noticed some families were struggling to afford food, so she planted a number of neighbourhood gardens. That’s not all — she even opened a medical clinic from which to assist people in the fight against Covid-19.torlages.co.za@coenraadtorlage…1 min
SMART TRAVELLERCentral NorwayThousands of pink-footed geese roost in central Norway in spring, on their way to their breeding grounds in Svalbard, high up in the Arctic Circle. Possibly because of climate change, the birds come earlier every year and the fields where they feed are often covered in snow by the time they arrive. Since the geese tend to use the same route, I was able to get my drone into position shortly before their arrival and capture the birds mid-flight.terjekolaas.com@terjekolaasphotosPhoto of the year at the Drone Photo Awards 2021. droneawards.photo…1 min
SMART TRAVELLERRISING STARSMoscow is rarely regarded as one of Europe’s culinary capitals, but that’s all set to change with the publication of the very first Michelin guide to the city, released this autumn. Michelin said its inspectors were particularly taken by the high-quality local produce, adding, ‘Russia is a wonderfully wide-ranging expression of nature, from sea coasts to wild forests.’That natural bounty is front and centre at two-Michelin-star ARTEST – CHEF’S TABLE, where Arkady Novikov and Artem Estafiev go big on wide-ranging flavours and textures. At their restaurant in the Arbat district, expect plates such as smoked catfish with pickled courgette flower, and oyster mushrooms with guinea fowl yolk. TWINS GARDEN, run…2 min
