Early life and career Sandoval started her career in 1986 with her friend Sylvia Gomez in a folk music duo called Going Home. Opal and Mazzy Star The first Mazzy Star album, She Hangs Brightly was released in 1991. While not a commercial success, this album did establish Hope and David as a unique band with a sound that has been often imitated. They had what many consider a surprise breakthrough hit single in early 1992. "Fade Into You" — from their second album So Tonight That I Might See — was recorded one year before it became a success (with heavy video rotation on MTV). The tracks on the third Mazzy Star album, Among my Swan continue the sound and feel established on the first two albums. Post-Mazzy Star Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions Subsequently, The Warm Inventions released three EPs but received very little commercial success, no video on MTV, and very little radio play. Nonetheless, this band's efforts were appreciated by her fan base.
Sandoval is from a large Mexican-American family in East Los Angeles, California.
Hope started to sing and perform with the band Opal in the late 1980s alongside David Roback. The two began writing together and renamed the band Mazzy Star.
After 1996, Hope began a career of working with other bands. She collaborated with a series of artists, including the Jesus & Mary Chain, Chemical Brothers, Death In Vegas, Bert Jansch, and Vetiver.
Hope formed The Warm Inventions and released their first (and thus far only album) called "Bavarian Fruit Bread", in 2001. This album sounds, again, little different in terms of theme, voice, and instrumentation than that of her work with Mazzy Star. However, with a larger band behind her, and more time to work creatively, Hope's voice has matured on these songs.

On the light
On the low
All this time
I always
Held the light
On for you
But I know I'm a fool
Yes, I know
On the light
On the low
All this time
I always
Held the light
On for you
But I know I'm a fool
Yes, I know (yes, I know)
(On the low)
(Ba ba ba)
On the light
On the low
All this time
I always (I always)
Held the light (held the light)
On for you (on)

The lyrics of Hope Sandoval's song "On The Low" seem to be about unrequited love and a futile attempt by the singer to keep her feelings hidden. The repetition of the phrase "On the light, On the low" could potentially signify the contrast between the singer's desire to be seen and acknowledged by the object of her affection, while at the same time, wanting to keep her emotions hidden and not publicly acknowledged.
The lines "All this time I always held the light on for you" suggest that the singer has been waiting and hoping for the other person's reciprocation for a long time. However, the following line "But I know I'm a fool" suggests a self-awareness of their irrational behavior, indicating that they might be aware that their feelings might never be reciprocated. The repetition of "Yes, I know" could be an attempt by the singer to reassure themselves of this fact.
The line "On the low" towards the end of the song could be interpreted as the singer's attempt to keep their feelings concealed and not let anyone else know about their emotions. The repetition of the phrase in this section could indicate the struggle they face in keeping their feelings hidden.
On the light
Previously, I was always showing my happiness and sharing my positive energy with you.
On the low
But now, I'm being reserved and keeping my emotions and feelings to myself.
All this time
Throughout our entire relationship, I've been shining brightly and constantly providing support to you.
I always
Without fail, I was consistently there for you.
Held the light
I was the source of positivity and hope.
On for you
My efforts were directed towards you and making you happy.
But I know I'm a fool
However, I realize that I may have been foolish and naive in my actions.
Yes, I know
I am aware of this fact and accept it.
(On the low)
Once again, I am now being more secretive and guarding my emotions.
(Ba ba ba)
On the light
Despite my reserved nature now, I still have the capacity to be a positive influence.
On the low
But I choose to keep this to myself.
All this time
My light has not been extinguished, and I still have hope.
I always (I always)
My unwavering support and care for you has not changed.
Held the light (held the light)
I was the guiding light and source of hope.
On for you (on)
But now, I will keep this light shining on for myself.
